Curriculum

At North Hinksey we are proud of the breadth of our curriculum and how it is designed to give children a love of learning.
Whole School Curriculum
We have developed a clear intent for our curriculum and personal development for all children at North Hinksey.

For detailed information about this, and the implementation of each subject, please click here.

At North Hinksey CE Primary School teaching is tailored towards the needs of the children.  For information about the non-core objectives covered in each year group, please click here for a whole school overview.  We tailor the non-core curriculum each year by building on previous learning with information passed up about topics taught, and objectives covered.  This means for most year groups there are some fixed topics e.g. Romans in Year 4, leaving the opportunity for teachers to spend some terms teaching topics that build on the interests of the children in the class.  For up to date information about learning for this term, please see the most up to date newsletter for each class below.

English
For information about how we approach English learning, click here.

Phonics
We use the Read Write Inc Scheme to teach phonics in Reception and Key Stage One.

Maths Calculations
For Maths we follow the school's calculation policy, which can be found in video form on our YouTube channel here.

Religious Education

For RE we follow the Oxfordshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. To help us plan and implement this syllabus, and to ensure coverage and progression, the school is using the RE scheme of work published by the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education.   For the key stage one plan click here, and for the key stage two plan click here.

PSHE and Relationships and Health Education
For Personal, Social and Health Education, we use the PSHE Association plans and resources.  Click here to see more information about what these plans cover.  These plans link directly to the expectations within the Relationships and Health Education from the Department for Education, click here for more information.

Within the PSHE curriculum, learning covers changing adolescent bodies.   We will always inform parents before units of work that may lead to questions and discussions at home, and these are highlighted on the long term PSHE plan, click here.  In Year 6 parents will be provided with information in advance about any sex education (human reproduction and birth), and given the choice to withdraw their child from these sessions.

For ideas for resources to use at home with your child regarding changing bodies, click here.

Oxfordshire Music Service
We are pleased to be able to offer music lessons through the Oxfordshire Music Service for children to learn the piano, flute, guitar and brass instruments.  Please click here for more information. In 2021-22, the Year 4 class will learn the violins with weekly lessons from the Oxfordshire Music Service.

Sports
Every class takes part in weekly PE lessons covering the national curriculum objectives.  We aim for children to experience a wide range of skills and sports, building on previous learning.
Club Energy provide weekly sports coaching for Years 2, 3, 4 and 6.  They also provide sports coaches during some lunchtimes to set up sports for children to play. PE lessons also take place weekly, taught by the class teacher. Different after school sporting clubs are offered on a termly basis.  For more information regarding sporting opportunities and the use of Sports Premium Funding, please see the 'Sports Premium' area of this website.
